Anna's Cubby Hole: Ramblings of a Cub Reporter
As a journalism student and intern, I've learned that life as a cub reporter is filled with "lessons" about life, being ignored and journalism. Being stuck in the cubby hole can be frustrating, but who knew clawing my way to the top would also be enjoyable?
About this blog
When I began this blog in summer 2010, I was wrapping up a stint at my local paper, The Evanston RoundTable, where I had the opportunity to experience small-town, hyperlocal reporting. I intended for this blog to be an outlet to rant about journalism internships and about working for New York University’s college newspaper, The Washington Square News, where I was a deputy editor at the time. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to do the WSN, work an internship and have a life–let alone actively blog.
I hoped the blog would allow me to discuss the problems a “cub” (journalism-speak for slave) would have in the newsroom, whether on a professional publication or something like the WSN. I wanted to focus my discussion on dealing with interviewees, editing, sources and the implications of the things I write. However, after quitting the WSN (see “Catching Up and the Horse Race“), I started writing about the future of journalism and my struggle to make sense of what’s happening, as well as how to “make it” in a vastly changing industry.
I hope you enjoy the blog. If you’re interested in media or journalism in the slightest, this blog definitely has something for you. I talk about technology, importance of journalism, writing and, on occasion, I’ll post an article (completely written and reported by me, most likely for a journalism class).
